Save Your Life By Understanding the Causes and Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer

Posted on March 14, 2008

As with most types of cancer, the exact reason for prostate cancer’s development remains unknown. But thanks to the billions of dollars spent annually on research, scientists are getting closer to pinpointing the causes and risk factors of prostate cancer. Until a cure is discovered, it’s important to focus on what is known.

Age plays the biggest factor when determining who is most susceptible to prostate cancer. The chances of developing the disease increase rapidly after a man turns 50. In fact, nearly two-thirds of prostate cancer cases occur in men who are aged 65 and over.

While it’s unclear what role geography plays, prostate cancer is more prevalent in North America and Russia and surrounding countries in northwestern Europe. Interestingly, though cases are less frequent in Asia and Africa, prostate cancer is more common among African-American men than in any other race. Further, prostate cancer in African-American males is typically found at more advanced stages and is more likely to be fatal. Overall, the disease occurs less frequently in American men of Asian descent and Hispanic/Latino men than in Caucasian males.

Research has shown a genetic link likely comes into play, but to what extent is not certain. Men whose immediate family members, such as brothers or fathers, who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer have increased chances of developing the disease. The odds increase further if the cancer was diagnosed in their relatives early life.

Several other risk factors for prostate cancer have been extensively studied but have proved inconclusive, such as poor diet, excessive weight, lack of exercise and infection of the prostate.
