Green Tea Death Knell for Prostate Cancer - True or False

Posted on April 7, 2008

One of the biggest killers specifically for men is prostate cancer, and as such, a great deal of resource has been carried out on this topic. Now, this is of particular interest to me, as I had been diagnosed with a non-malignant enlarged prostate some years ago, and every year, my doctor who is also a family friend, has to do the usual rubber glove examination. Not very dignified, but compared to the alternative, I have to thank him for the constant observation.

So, being on whatever pills the National Heath Service can subscribe for you, I was astonished to read a report that Green Tea, made from the same plant as the black tea varieties, according to many reports, possessed properties that could not only deter prostrate cancer from appearing, but if it did, could attack and destroy the cancerous cells.

Not ever having tried green tea, I went out and bought what seemed a very expensive pack of tea, and then sampled it. I think it can be said it is an acquired taste although as I had got used to waking up to a cup of hot lemon tea, the green tea certainly had a lot more taste.

Next, I tried to find how much of this stuff I would have to consume, or whether I would have to look for some sort of concentrate. Amazing how experts come up with different solutions. On the one hand, it looked like around 20 cups of green tea a day would be needed; while others said 2 a day would do the trick, but this is an extract from the National Cancer Research unit… confusing isn’t it?

“Antioxidants called catechins may reduce the size and number of cancer tumors, although large amounts of green tea are needed to be effective. The U.S. National Cancer Institute is funding a study looking at the effects of drinking 10 to 15 cups of decaffeinated green tea in reversing pre-cancerous lesions in the lungs of former smokers.”

OK, so what is in green tea that isn’t in ordinary black tea, seeing as how all tea comes from the same species of tea plant? Well, this would seem to be in both the manner in which the tea is harvested, and would you believe, in the way in which it is infused into your cup.

It all starts out the same, but black tea is actually allowed to ferment before it is processed, whereas green tea is harvested and used straight away. This fermenting process tends to leach out the active components (catechins as mentioned above). Then, the tea should be infused slowly in the cup, giving the good bits time to leach out. Tests had shown that where iced tea was made with the same tea, virtually none of the good elements were present in the drink.

Me - I look at the mortality rate of men in the Western world of prostate cancer compared with the low rate in China, where green tea is part of their staple diet - and there is no option. It’s green tea for me, several times a day.

We are all looking for that elusive elixir to a longer and healthier life. The benefits of Green Tea as such a solution have been known for over 4,000 years and Chinese Green Tea is still revered for its medicinal benefits. Cancer and heart disease prevention are just two of the miracles of Green Tea. Have a look at this collection of informative article on Green tea at greenteaadvisor.com
