Is Lycopene Effective in Fighting Prostate Cancer?

Posted on May 16, 2008

There has been a lot of attention to the natural antioxidants lycopene in recent years. Some have speculated it could be a an aide in curing certain cancers including prostate cancer. Rich in antioxidants lycopene is taken by many people as an anti-aging and cancer fighting alternative. Lycopene comes from tomatoes and is found in any tomato product.

Ketchup manufacturers were even advertising having lycopene in the product and the cancer fighting benefits. The best part of all is that tomato products are relatively cheap and easy to find in most peoples regular diet. Lycopene neutralizes free radicals which can damage cells.

There have been swings in support of lycopene as an effective weapon against certain kinds of cancer. Different studies were showing different evidence and it was confusing at times to know who to believe. The most recent study done which ended in May 2007 by the National Cancer Institute showed no link between lycopene and helping against prostate cancer. The study performed involved 28,000 men.

While lycopene will not hurt you, just don’t think you are fighting prostate cancer by taking it. Lycopene is found in many natural prostate cancer supplements found on the internet for sale today. So when deciding what to use for your fight against prostate cancer always look for the latest medical studies because what is in favor today can be ruled out tomorrow.

Keep this in mind when choosing prostate supplements. Always research each individual ingredient independently to know if you need everything in the formula.
