Lung Cancer and Making a Difference
Posted on August 22, 2008
My sister died of Lung Cancer - she wasn’t diagnosed until stage 4 - didn’t have a symptom until it metastasized to her brain. Early detection could have prevented this. There is a diagnostic tool called the CT Spiral Scan and we need to rally and get send a message Congress can’t ignore. Ask your Senators to add their support to S.3187, the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act.
My sister Dale died four years ago this past May. When she died I had no idea how big a void would be created. Up to the end Dale and I would talk on the phone 3 - 4 times a day and then it just stopped - no more sharing - no more laughing and no more crying. At the end I told Dale that I would plant a tree and name it after her - I asked her what tree she wanted to be - she said she wanted to be a peach tree. My husband and I had bought an old house on 1 acre of land and it needed a lot of work - the grounds were a disaster but there was tremendous potential to turn it into something beautiful.
So we cleared an area and designated it as ” Dale’s Garden” it was sparse - but we went out and bought 3 peach trees ( to insure that at least one made it) and put them in the garden with a few 5 gallon banana, apricot, plum and almond trees. It looked pretty pathetic but I had sprinked some of Dale’s ashes around the bigger peach tree and it has been amazing how quickly things have grown. Dale’s garden has turned into a magical place for me - I know it is Dale’s way of communicating to me. She has replaced the dark, hopeless and agonizing experience surrounding her illness and death with a message of love, peace and beauty. Over the last 4 years I have taken many pictures of the flowers, trees, vegetables and koi pond that grace this place in her memory. Her spirit nourishes the earth and warms my heart.
The other day as I was weeding an idea came to mind - I had been trying to think of something I could do to make a difference..a difference for Dale. Inspired by Dale I created Dale’s Garden - where anyone can go to witness the beauty of the garden and be touched by her creations.
Please share Dale’s Garden with all your family, friends and any organizations you belong to - please send it to everyone in your address book. I would like your help to reach as many people as possible around the world. Getting emails from people in other countries that have seen the beauty of Dale’s creations will confirm that Dale still touches people today.
Spread the word - NO MORE EXCUSES….NO MORE LUNG CANCER.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the lining of the lungs. Its main cause is thought to be contact with asbestos. About 3000 new cases are reported every year in the United States, with about 8 million people having been exposed to asbestos in the last 50 years. Safety measures have been put into place in the last couple of decades so as to protect people from asbestos exposure; therefore, some think that the number of cases of mesothelioma will peak around 2020 and that it will begin to decline after that, since exposure to asbestos by then will… Continue reading
There are real, although very limited, benefits of diet and supplements in supporting mesothelioma. There’s nothing to buy that would prevent this horrible form of cancer, although eating fresh vegetables seems to tie in to a reduction in the rate of development. More recently, the medical literature suggests that one B vitamin may at least make one form of chemo for mesothelioma less toxic.
Dr. H. L Kindler of the Hematology/Oncology Section at the University of Chicago Hospitals finds that medically supervised folic acid supplementation probably decreases the toxicity of pemetrexed (Alimta). The research absolutely, positively does not suggest that anyone… Continue reading
