I’m sure most, if not all of us have had someone close to us diagnosed with breast cancer. Many of us have watched that person go through round after round of chemotherapy. Many of us have watched as their bodies were forever surgically altered. Many of us have watched them lose their battle and pass away. Whatever your experience may be, one thing is certain. Trying to find the right way to help someone with breast cancer can be tough.

I’ll fully admit that there are no right or wrong answers here. It will largely depend on the patient themselves; their personality, their demeanor. So, there will be some trial and error involved in your quest to make their situation more comfortable, but here are a few things that have worked for me in the past and are still working to this day:

1) Patience - I should call this extreme patience, because often times extreme patience is exactly what is required. When someone is having toxic chemicals pumped into their body, or are preparing for surgery, they aren’t always going to be themselves. They may snap. They may cry. They may do any number of things you aren’t used to that might normally offend you. Just be patient. Try and put yourself in their shoes and just be there.

2) Support - Obviously, patience is a big part of being supportive, but there are other elements as well. Sometimes, the person you love so much who has been told they have breast cancer will choose a treatment path you don’t necessarily agree with.
